Dundee ready for snowbusting

THE RESIDENTS OF Dundee can expect snow-free streets this winter thanks to the purchase of three new DAF-based grittersnowploughs by Tayside Contracts, the commercial wing of Dundee City Council and the Councils of Angus and Perth.

The three LF55 18-tonne DAFs feature a six-cylinder GR165 engine delivering 300hp (220kW) at 1,900rpm and a massive 1,100Nm of torque between 1,200rpm and 1,900rpna to help keep the trucks moving in even the most difficult of conditions. An engine-mounted PTO drives a hydraulic pump for the gritting equipment and plough.

Permanent gritter bodies and snowploughs by Cuthbertson of Biggar are fitted to the trucks.

The bodies can carry 6nii of salt and spread at a rate of up to 40g/m2 of road surface in 5g increments, across a maximum width of 12m. They also have the ability to 'spot blast' areas of severe ice.
