KEEPING ON TOP OF TRANSPORT TROUBLES.

Mr. J. F. E. Pye, chairman of the Metropolitan Area of A.R.O., spoke on the subject of transport problems to a large gathering of the North London Sub-area at the George Hotel, Enfield, on Monday. Mr. A. J. Goddard. chairman of this sub-area, took the chair, and Mr. R. M Morgan, secretary, was also present.

Mr. Pye said that during the past 10 years great strides had been made in the matter of road transport, but they must not allow matters to come to a standstill; the members of the Association must work together for the good of the whole industry.'

Mr. Gleeson Robinson, the Licensing Authority, was, he said, a good friend to the Association, and just in his dealings between road and rail transport. There were tremendous difficulties, concerning licensing, to be overcome, but this could be done if the members would work together. Mr. Pye touched on several licensing problems, including the new extension for A and B licences, saying that he thought there was some dissatisfaction in this connection.

Speaking on the question of benefits to members, Mr. Pye said he thought members did not take enough notice of these benefits. Neither the insurance scheme nor the status inquiry scheme was being taken advantage of to a great extent.

TRUE ESTIMATION OF RUNNING COSTS.

A keenly attentive audience of upwards of 30 heard S.T.R., The Commercial Motor costs expert, at Southend last week. S.T.R. took the line, on this occasion, of impressing those present with the importance of making provision, ahead of time, for expenditure which was irregular, i.e.. the heavier items of maintenance expense, such as replacement of tyres. He pointed out that, with the exception of big operators who hare in the course of years accumulated extensive informatiOn as to costs, there were few hauliers who could estimate rates on the basis of current expenditure.

In dealing with the running costs, S.T.R. followed the scheme of the new edition of The Commercial Motor Tables of Operating Costs, in making provision for variation in expenditure as between vehicles covering small annual mileages, average annual mileages and high annual mileages respectively.

• S.T.R. was followed by Mr. Nugent Linaker, who explained the A.R.O. Insurance Scheme, and Mr. G. W. Irwin, secretary of the area, who, deputizing for Mr. H. J. Lloyd, the chairman, gave a particularly lucid explanation of what was likely to be the outcome of the implementing of the Road Haulage Wages Act.

Added Powers for Associations?

An important resolution, which aims at strengthening national organization among operators of goods transport by road, was.passed at last week's monthly meeting of the North-eastern Divisional Committee of the C.M.U.A. The resolution lays down the principle that no member will load, hire or sub-let work to any operator who is not a member of the C.M.U.A. or any other operators' national association. C.M.U.A. headquarters are being asked to consider this proposition, with a view to its application to the C.M.U.A. generally.

The committee approved a scheme put forward from the division's passenger section, concerning the provision, for passenger members, of service at the divisional office in Leeds, relating to the completion of licence application forms and so forth. Full details of this scheme may be obtained on application to the Divisional Office, the address of which is 15. Greek Street. Leeds, 1.
