How the Salter Report Will Hit Newcastle.

Mr. T. P. Easton, general manager of the transport undertaking of Newcastle Corporation, has prepared an outspoken report on the Salter Committee recommendations, in which he points out that if they take effect, the licence duties to be paid by the corporation will be raised from £7,920 to £25,519, representing an increase of £162 per vehicle in the bus fleet. Mr. Easton further points out that the undertaking would be paying approximately £53,000 per annum to the Government in licence and petrol duties and income tax, which represents over 25 per cent, of the total revenue of the bus department.

From whatever angle the report is viewed, Mr. Easton says, it is not possible to escape the conclusion that it is very heavily weighted on the side of the railways, and adds that-prompt and vigorous measures are necessary to defeat the most drastic and burdensome proposals that have ever been made upon passenger road transport.
