Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

IN 1951, 12m. tonsof goods were Learned by road in Israel, whereas the railways conveyed only 910,000 tons. Most of the road tonnage was dealt with • by 2,600 lorries of capacities of 5 tons or more. There are 15,384 goods vehicles in the country, 3,000 of which are more than 10 years old.

and 14,470 last year. The total of public service vehicles was 807 in 1948, 1,019 in 1949, 1,309 in 1950, 1,505 in 1951 and 1,580 in 1952. Only those persons who can prove that a car is indispensable in their work may own one. Nevertheless, such vehicles grew in number from 4,853 'in 1948 to 13,006 in 1952.

There is only one railway in the country and it runs from Jerusalem to Haifa, via Tel Aviv. There are no connections to densely populated areas. such as Galilee, the Yesreel Valley and the Negev, the southern part of Israel, which is being developed. Much of the responsibility for fulfilling transport needs is therefore thrown upon road operators.

A great burden is created by growing demands resulting from large-scale immigration. Population has doubled since the state was established in 1948, and newly set up settlements involve extensions of route.

Some 250 of the 1,760 taxis in Israel ply along the Jerusalem-Tel Aviv-Haifa roads. An acquisition programme provides for the replacement of 350 wornout vehicles and the addition of 500 new machines to extend taxi services to existing and new settlements.

The spares situation is complicated, as there are some 50 different makes of vehicle in the country. It is impossible to provide the skilled mechanics needed to maintain so many, and the Government is standardizing vehicle imports and encouraging an indigenous spare-parts industry.
