The Amenities of a Prosecution.

"Age does not wither, nor custom stale, the infinite variety" of the evidence which is submitted practically every week, in Bolton Borough Court. Thos. Ridgely (Preston) was summoned for exceeding the speed limit. A measured half-mile was said to be covered at the rate of 6 miles 919 yds. per hour.

The police solicitor said the registered unladen weight of the vehicle was 4 tqns 19 cwt. 2 qrs. "Another two quarters," he added quite unnecessarily, "would in the eyes of the law have converted the motor into a traction engine." It is this gratuitous comment which the police solicitor might reasonably, and without any discredit to those he represents, omit.

A Corporation road surveyor said surfaces were damaged by the extra speed of motors. Mr. Grace (Manchester) asked him if he would seriously stick to that statement.

Witness : Yes ; I have followed a heavy motor lorry travelling at 5 m.p.h. and seen the damage done to the road, and I have followed the same motor over the same road at a greater speed than 5 m.p.h., and have seen that the damage was greater to the road.

The magistrate's clerk remarked that Mr. Grace was trifling with the case.

Mr. Grace : Then perhaps Mr. Hall (the advocate for the police) will confine himself to proving the excessive speed.

Pined £5, and costs. Typical Economies.

In our last issue, our readers will remember, we published, amongst a number of other interesting articles, an aisc45unt of a day)e work with a. brewer's Sentinel steam wagon. At the conclusion of this article, we quoted a number of interesting figures showing the costs per ton-mile which Mr. D. E.. the traffic manager of GWraetesnoliiia,11, Whitley and Co., Ltd., of Wilderspool Brewery, Warrington, had secured by the use of these machines. We are able to supplement these preliminary figures by reproductions of the profit and loss account which has resulted during 1911 and 1912, in regard to the steam-wagon fleet of four machines possessed by this owner. We reproduce these below, as kindly furnished.
