Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

:—" I recently came across a split pin which is, I believe, an American production, and which seems to be a distinct im provement on the ordinary split up. The everyday pin of this sort is, to say the least of it, sometimes difficult to draw from the bolt, especially when the ends are spread widely apart. It is rather a difficult job to hack a split pin into pieces when it is awkwardly situated. Sometimes the pin is burred up when it has been cut, and is then as hard to withdraw when the ends. have been cut off as before. " I send you a sketch of the improved pin. The loop at the end is all on one side ; one of the points is slightly longer than the other, and is bent over the shorter end. When the pin is driven, a slight knock on the head drives the short end against the upturned longer end, and this spreads the pin out to the right extent. When the pin has to be removed, a blow with a hammer starts the short end first, and the bent end theft slips out quite easily."
