Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

[1172] " E.B." (Dartford) writes:—" I have often experienced trouble with broken springs on the rear axles of steam lorries. Some three years ago, I thought out a little dodge which I have since adopted with the greatest success. The spring guide used to wear very hollow before I adopted this plan. This hollow allowed the snring to stick and, of course. stopped it from Forking. After several breakages, I found out the cause, and then I had new guides made, and also fitted a special wearing plate under the guides. I had these plates bent up at each end, in order to keep them from dropning out. When the plates wear hollow and the spring sticks, it is now a very simple matter to make un a new plate."
