The new Multilift Midiskip loader mounted on a Ford Cargo chassis makes its debut at Tipcon this year, on stand 36. The simplicity of design and strength are important ingredients of this equipment and allow it to carry up to 23cum (34cuyd) skip capacities with a four ton payload.

Daf Trucks (GB) celebrates its tenth anniversary this year with a display of 16 tippers in the show.

At the top of the range, the 8x4 FAD 2500 DHS is the vehicle that was expected to be seen at last year's show but did not appear until NEC. It is a more powerful version of its predecessor and has a revised rear bogie which improves ground clearance and roll stability. The 2255T twinspring bogie is mounted through rather than under the chassis, and its eight-rod configuration, with sealed-for-life torque rod ends, helps to maintain constant wheel alignment.

The double-drive bogie incorporates an inter-axle diff-lock and a cross-lock mechanism is standard on the hub reduction model.

The Daf OHS turbocharged and intercooled diesel produces 182kW (244bhp) at 2,400rpm and 907Nm (669Ibft) of torque at 1,600rpm. At 24 tons gvw, the 2,300 6x4 chassis is shown with bodies from Telehoist, Neville Charrold, Craven Tasker and Stevecastle and shares the same rear-bogie with the eight-legger.

Both FAD 2500 and FAT 2300 employ a nine-speed synchromesh ZF 5S-92 gearbox with a low 13 to 1 ratio crawler gear for maximum gradeability.

Mitchel Diesel of Sutton-inAshfield has a range of services to offer with the sales of Detroit Diesel engines and Allison transmission backed up by a complete parts service, production and machining facilities. A new Edbro design of front single ram hoist for eight-wheel tippers makes its UK debut at this exhibition along with the DK1 6 "upside down" hoist originally designed by Edbro for a construction site operator in the Middle East.

Intended specially for the UK market, the new Edbro tipping hoist for eight-wheelers can be seen raising an Edbro welded-alloy Fastline body on a Daf FAD2500 8x4 chasis. The four stage hoist has a stroke of 5,050mm (1981n).

Wide sloping pillars are a distinguishing feature of the Edbro Fastline body seen on a Scam mell 524 chasis.

Although not intended for very heavy duty site work, the scow-ended body is continuously welded and has hefty side rails. It is mounted on a reinforced sub frame and has heavy duty hinges at the rear. The four-stage hoist has a stroke of 4,535mm (178in), a lift capacity of 45 tonnes and a maximum tipping angle of 65 degrees, which is why it has power return on the last stage of the extending cylinders.

The difference between the DK series hoist and that on a conventional dumper is that this latest Edbro design has its ram assembly mounted upside down, thus reducing the risk of damage to the hydraulic system -by keeping piping to the minimum.

ERF has several new models on show this year; all are part of the new C Series lightyverght specification.

The 25 C3 6x4 tipper is powered by the latest Cummins L10 turbocharged diesel, and like all other rigid chassis on show has Norde rubber suspension.

The Mini-Ampliroll all hydraulic swap body handling system is aimed at the 5 to 7.5 tonn gvw vehicle by Hearncrest Boughton Engineering of Amersham.

The system consists of a pto pump, hydraulic reservoir distribution block, which is operated from within the cab, using just two levers. One lever activates the main ram for loading and unloading while a second controls the movement of a telescopic jib.

Flanged rollers centralise the body and body locking is autornatic.

On the Hytec stand the exhibits consist of sectioned tipping gear ram/tank assembly and an assortment of pto/pump units valves and fittings, cradle and tail hinge brackets mounted on a dummy Ck1SSiS.

The ram is bore sealing using an improved type of cup washer seal. For sixand eight-wheel chassis it is combined with the oil tank giving a lighter and simpler unit to fit.

The basic Interlube XGS, system for tippers consists of three main components — control box, pump assembly and associated bearing connection tubing. The system operates from existing vehicle services with electrical supply taken from the ignition circuit, and air pressure from the vehicle's auxiliary air supply.

The XGS pump assembly is complete with an integral 2kg reservoir and fixing bracket and is available in five models catering for up to 60 lubrication points. A separate control box controls the lubrication cycle time. Complete lubrication cycles are variable between 3 and 60 minutes.

Karrier Motor's tipper chassis range includes rigid models up to 16 tonnes gvw from Renault and Dodge.

Both Dodge Commando 2 G16 and Renault GF151 have a similar power output — around 110kW (147bhp) — and both have five-speed synchromesh gearboxes, but the Dodge has two-speed rear-axle.

The slightly longer wheelbas of the GF151 allows a slight longer body length. Howeve what the Dodge lacks in lengtt it makes up in height for bot Mackworth and K & J Withe steel tipper have the sam 6.9cum (9cuyd) capacity.

The third engine on stand N L49 is the T6.3544 six-cylinder diesel unit. Charge-cooling adds ten per cent to the power output of a turbo-charged unit giving a maximum output of 119kW (159bhp) at 2,600rpm.

Phillips Trucks, South Yorkshire's main distributor for

Seddon Atkinson, is exhibiting features relating to the whole vehicle range, and through a long association with Perkins Engines the company is displaying products from the Powerpart range.

Load up for increased profit is the message put over by Precision Loads of Skipton, by using either its on-board or freestanding weighing equipment. A four-cell system caters for four-, sixand eight-wheel rigids and articulated tippers at a cost of £2,750. It has a proven life of over 10 years and carries a 100 per cent labour and parts guarantee for two years. Some customers are quoting savings of up to £170 per week through maximising on payloads.

Load cells can be mounted within the fifth wheel, on mono leaf springs or on the spring centre hanger, while a load cell can be placed directly on the axle to give a readout inside the cab.

The range of Harsh tipping gears first made their appear

ance in Britain at Tipcon 81. This year they are being displayed by a new independent company Rigid Tipping Gears.

The RL190 gear on display is a new model designed specifically for the UK market with emphasis towards the narrow-width European chassis. With its 32ton lift capacity the new gear has a reduced overall width which enables it to be fitted directly on the chassis without the use of a mounting frame. The way the ram tubes are fitted within the lower arms of the stabilising frame is of particular interest.

The example on display is fitted to a Volvo F7 eightwheeler with a general purpose alloy body.

Rubery Owen-Rockwell components can be seen on Neville Charrold's new 9.1m (30ft) step frame/fixed side tri-axle tipper. Neway air suspension is installed complete with a Scaleo-Matic overload indicator system.

Designed to carry a payload of 26 tons, the tipper's integrated overload systems weighs the load on the air-suspended axles by measuring air pressure.

The system installed by Neville Charrold incorporates an axle lift to enable the driver to raise the rear wheels of the tri-axle configuration saving fuel and tyre wear.

Rockwell International's new SQ100 tandem drive axle fea tures optional aluminium carrier, castings, which allow substantial weight savings.

Rydewell's rubber suspension systems shown on stand L57 give considerable cost savings by eliminating mechanical spring breakage and providing a smooth ride in all load conditions.

Rydewell also offers an axleweighing system with an in-cab read out. Transducers are mounted on the axle, directly into the suspension arms of a beam suspension, or under the fifth-wheel coupler.

For 38-tonne operation Scania has produced a range of 6x2 single-steer tractive units. A trailing rear axle is single-tyred and features a bogie hoist and diff-lock. Power ratings range from 208kW (280bhp) with the medium-sized P cab to 313 kW (420bhp) for the top of the range R-cabbed vehicles. The R112M 6x2 shown is equipped with the latest charge cooled unit.

A P82M 8x4 to be operated by the D. Sykes of Barnsley is shown with a George Neville body and powered by the Scania 172 kW (231bhp) eight-litre intercooled engine. The specification provides for either a 10-speed splitter or range change gearbox.

Rear suspension is by a fourspring non-reactive bogie.

Two of Seddon Atkinson's ex

hibits are new to Harrogate. The 401 8x4 R26 introduced earlier this year has a Rolls-Royce 265L power unit producing 1913kW (265bhp) and 1,080Nm (796 lbft) of torque. It is used ahead of a nine-speed Fuller range-change overdrive gearbox driving through to single reduction rear axles mounted with Norde rubber suspension.

A 301 8x4 fitted with the Cummins 10-litre 180kW (241bhp) engine is a new addition to the SA range offering a lightweight alternative to the 401.

For conversion of units and trailers to conform to the new higher weights, the company is displaying a chassis fitted with two Granning air-lift suspension units.

Coma tipping gear is imported by Stallion Hydraulic Services of Dartford. Its new front-end ram assembly on show has not been seen in Britain before as it is geared to the new weight regulations.

Designated PFVS4 — 1887303, it has a 42-tonne lifting capacity with only four stages and is consequently lighter than a five-stage ram but has thicker than average tubes and longer overlap to resist buckling.

An all-mechanical automatic opening tailgate by ltalianto is another product shown on the same stand.

Two tipping bodies are shown by Stevecastle of Oundle at maximum weight for articulated and rigid vehicles.

A tri-axle tipping trailer is suited to bulk transport with a capacity of almost 40cum (52cuyd) and should enable a payload of 25 tonnes to be achieved.

A high-capacity bulk transport body on an 8x4 rigid chassis is being supplied to an operator who specialises in the carriage of minerals and lightweight scrap.

Aluminium alloy is used throughout but it is hardened for the areas which need to have maximum resistance to abrasive wear.

Greater stability, improved load equalisation and low overall height are three advantages of a new tipping trailer now available from Craven Tasker.

The model is built with a range of capacities from 35 to 42cum (50 to 55cuyd) to meet the new 38-tonnes gross weight legislation, and the jig-built construction of both chassis and body avoids the high production costs of alternatives such as the stepframe type.

A specially profiled chassis frame lowers the centre of gravity at the rear. The company says this: "Improves roll and wind resistance tendencies. The gradually tapered shapes of body and chassis eliminate sharp section changes thereby avoiding high stresses."

Improved load compensation between the axles is achieved by keeping the main frame bottom flanges parallel to the ground in the running condition.

In spite of the much greater capacity, overall height is kept very close to existing levels, which assists access under low structures and the "over-the side" bucket loading.

Manufacturing of Tekaloid Transport finishes for commercial refinishing have launched a new product, Tekaloid Fleetmix, which is a new weight-mixing scheme, designed to extend the availability of the already established Fleet Tekaloid Polyurethane Enamel.

It can be applied by conventional air-assisted or hot spray techniques. The best feature of Fleet Tekaloid Polyurethane Enamel is its abrasion resistance. The high-gloss finish of this onepack vehicle enamel claims to fight off heat, cold, road salt and other contaminants.

Vacu-Lug Tyre Organisation of Grantham claims to be the largest independent tyre reconditioners in the UK.

The Duramould RH pattern truck remould is the most recent addition to the range designed to diminish scrubbing problems experienced on tandem trailers and eight-wheelers. It is available in both standard and wide profile construction and its specially formulated tread compound is said to ensure maximum adhesion as well as achieving mileage results well in excess of those returned by new tyres.

Volvo's F12 6x2 rear steer tractive unit for 38 tonnes operation is built at Irvine Ayrshire and is powered by the TO 120GA turbocharged diesel engine developing (304bhp).

Other vehicles inside the hall and at the demonstration area include an F7 8x4 L equipped with a TD 70F turbocharged unit rated at 162kW (217bhp) which drives through a 16-speed range-change box. A Weightman alloy body is mounted on the chassis accompanied by Edbro EE16 tipping gear.

A Stevencastle 7.3m (24ft) bulk tipping body is shown on an 8x2 model fitted with a Volvo R52 fully synchromesh eightspeed range-change gearbox.

At just over half the weight, fully laden, the F6 completes the line up with an insulated steeldropside tipping body.

Volvo Hydraulics, a subsidiary of the giant Swedish company based in the UK at Wakefield, is following up its recent introduction of an aluminium cased bent axis piston pump with an ancillary range of pto's.

The Fl piston pump can be fitted to any commercial vehicle equipped with ZF or Fuller gearboxes. It is very light, weighing just 18kg for the 88kW (118bhp) unit and as it contains few moving parts, is very robust.

Weightlifter Bodies is a family business well known in the Midlands and north-western areas of the country.

A wide range of bodies is on display at this year's exhibition, including fixed siders and insulated bodies, but the main interest is likely to centre on a new aluminium trailer chassis frame both in tandem axle and tri-axle configuration. These are expected to allow a significant in crease in payload which very quickly offset the extra ( of a conventional steel trz chassis.

A new tri-axle stepframe ping trailer which gives m

mum payload within a minim overall height is exhibited for first time by bodybuilders E. Wilcox of Peterborough.

The unit was developed Wilcox in conjunction with S dyke Freight Systems of V bech.

Wilcox chose to develop stepframe principle to avoid r weight bias and tailgate Wes: The stepframe unit has 45cum (60cuyd) Wilcox ix fitted to the new Wilcox/Sead chassis, which features h ricated I beams to achieve mi mum strength with minim weight.

The chassis has a boll kingpin, Rubery Owen-Rocky axles, monoleaf suspension Lucas-Girling Skidcheck bri anti-locking system, and a bi in rear hinge assembly. Bi doors are fitted to allow : clean discharge of loads such coal and smokeless fuel.
