Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

and sometimes lengthy downtime which can result from elusive leaks in his vehicle's air, hydraulic or fuel systems. Now, high technology offers an alternative to the bucket of soapy water and other timehonoured remedies.

Maltron's leak detector uses ultrasonics to track down not only leaks but also worn bearings. In effect, it is an electronic equivalent of a stethoscope, and is four times as sensitive as the human ear, enabling diagnoses to be made quickly.

Ultrasound emitted by leaks or vibrations is detected by a quartz crystal sensor. Signals are converted electronically into an audible frequency, which rises in pitch and intensity as the fault is located.

In addition to an audible signal delivered to the user through headphones, an illuminated display on the instrument gives a visual indication of faults.

For pinpoint accuracy in locating wear in bearings, contact probes are available with Maltron's ultrasonic leak detectors.

The instruments are robustly constructed with metal bodies. They have their own 12V power supply and come packed in an attaché case also containing headphones, battery charger, localising sound probe and (if applicable) contact probe.

Price for a Type 115 ultrasonic detector with contact probe is £894.27 ex-works.

Among early customers of the Type 115 is Humberside Fire Brigade. Since February its three workshops have been using a single detector as an aid to maintaining more than 80 appliances. It is used solely for detecting leaks in their air brake circuits. According to a brigade spokesman the instrument enables leaks to be found in anything between 10 and 30 minutes, when conventional methods could take up to five hours.
