Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

TO meet increased costs of £.82,000, the Yorkshire Traction Co., Ltd., applied to vary the fares on 186 of their routes at Leeds on Monday.

Mr. N. H. Dean, general manager of the company, said it was their policy to reduce the mileage covered by the passenger, without altering the actual fare. Scales were produced which showed that where it now cost 3d. to travel 1.3 miles. in the future the distance would be only 1.2 miles. The final proposition was that passengers now paying 2s. 3d. to travel 24 miles, should in the future go only 22,5 miles for that price.

Costs had gone up by £82,000, and it was estimated that the new fare increases would bring in £49,000 in a full year.

Recently there had been a decline in the number of passengers carried. It had been estimated that the last fares increase in 1960 would bring in £104,000, but it had resulted in only £60,000. The company had made as many economies as they could by using large vehicles to 'cut out duplicate mileage.

The chairman of the Yorkshire Traffic Commissioners, Major F. S. Eastwood, said he considered the application reasonable and granted the increases, which will not come into effect until after August 12.

No Change under 9d.

13 IBBLE MOTOR SERVICES, LTD.,

NI. do not intend to apply for increases to fares costing less than 9d. This was revealed by Mr. F. D. Walker when he applied to the Northern Traffic Commissioners on behalf of Ribble for the renewal 'of licences for services they operate in Carlisle.

Carlisle Corporation objected to the application.

After hearing submissions from both parties, the Commissioners adjourned the hearing in order that they might consider the Corporation's representations more fully.

THE Northern Traffic Commissioners have granted applications by Newcastle upon Tyne and Sunderland Corporations to introduce increased fares on buses and trolleybuses. In the case of Newcastle, fares are to be raised by id. or Id.. while at Sunderland the minimum fare will be increased frdm lid. to 2d.
