Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

An Easily Fitted Accessory, of Proved Efficiency, Which is Being Handled by Wellworthy Piston Rings, Lid.

I N the by-pass engine-oil filter which is known as the General, for which the sole distributor is Wellworthy Piston Rings, Ltd., Radial Works, Lymington, Hants, the cleaning of the oil is a straight mechanical process, no effort being made to neutralize acidity by the addition of any chemical preparation to the filtering medium. The maker asserts that the reason no attempt is made to do this is because there is a danger of upsetting the stability of the oil, more especially those oils in which a fatty acid forms one of the constituents.

In the case of an oil in which a catalytic agent has been added, in order to increase molecular tension and thereby the strength of the oil film, the maker of the General filter points out that chemical treatment may destroy the bond and thus cause the constituent oils to separate out.

In the present filter, therefore, the filtering element, which is a cartridge comprised of cotton fibre compressed into a block and reground to form a mass of small hard lumps surrounded by gnarled and twisted fibres, is not chemically treated.

The complete cartridge consists of a container, having at its base a double a80

wire-gauze screen the purpose of which is to distribute the incoming oil over a large surface, Above the gauze comes a coarse absorbent material, which prevents excessively dirty oil flowing back when the engine is switched off. Then comes the main filtering element, in the upper end of which a wire frame is . arranged in such a way as to keep an open core.

The complete unit is housed in a substantial case, the lid of which is held in position by means of a bridgepiece, through the centre of which passes the locking bolt. Arranged on the underside of the lid are springs, which serve to restrain the cartridge from moving upwards.

When,. however, the oil is cold, the increased pressure serves to raise the cartridge to form a by-pass until the oil has thinned out. This arrangement prevents the possibility of the filtering medium becoming damaged as the result of excessive pressure.

Prices of General filters are as follow—Model 3A, which is suitable for the lighter types of commercial vehicle, 37s. 6d., refills 12s. 6d.; model 4A, for the heaviest types, including oilengined machines, 97s. 6d., refills 27s. 6d.
