Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• New traffic signs and road markings are being introduced by the Department of the Environment to indicate traffic lanes reserved for buses on urban roads.

The main features of a new uniform standard of signs and markings for bus lanes are a single wide solid white line to mark the edge of the reserved lane and new upright signs. These incorporate international symbols combined with arrows to show the number of lanes remaining available to other traffic. There are also new symbolic signs to assist drivers emerging from side roads on to a bus lane route.

When the new signs and restrictions are in operation on a road, all other vehicles will be prohibited from using the lane marked for buses. But for safety, pedal cyclists may use kerbside bus lanes where the buses move in the same direction as other traffic. They will, however, be excluded where the buses move against the main stream of traffic.

New worded signs have also been provided to warn pedestrians where this is necessary. Special arrangements can be made for direct access to premises fronting the bus lane when loading is permitted.

Local authorities are being asked to bring the signing of existing lanes into line as soon as possible.
