MR. H. M. S. CATHERWOOD recently resigned his directorship of the National Omnibus and Transport Co., Ltd.. according to the company's recently issued annual report. MR. P. G. STONE CLARx has been appointed a director of the company.
MR. W. R. GORDON, whose portrait appears on this page, has been a director of the Coal Utilisation council since it was formed five years ago, but
he resigned from this post a few days ago upon his appointment as commercial manager of Low Temperature Carbonisation, Ltd. In an interview, he mentioned that, when it is completed—probably by November—the whole output of low temperature carbonisation plants will be 775,000 tons of coal a year, which is expected to yield 16,000,000 gallons of liquid products, including petrol and Diesel oil.

HESKETH, for the past 15. years with the Yorkshire Traction Co., Ltd., Barnsley, has been appointed works manager to Barr and Wallace Arnold Trust, Ltd., the big Yorkshire independent operator of passenger and. goods services. ALDERMAN F, J. PAGETT, alderman and freeman of the borough of Wigan, has been appointed a Traffic Commissioner in the North-Western Area. He will occupy the position rendered vacant by the death of ALDERMAN J. MAXWELL, of Liverpool, and will represent the county borough and urban district council panel. Aid,. Pagett, who has been a Deputy Traffic Commissioner since 1931, was welcomed at a public sitting on Monday.
Mk. HAROLD HEATH has joined the boards of the Cornrner, Harrier, Sunbeam, Clement Talbot, Hillman and Humber concerns, and will in future be in charge of manufacture for the group.
MR. B. 13. WINTER and MR. A. Borw000 have been elected directors of the Humber concern and its associated manufacturing companies, and in future the former will be in charge of engineering and the latter of purchases for the entire group.
MR. WILLIAM EDWARDES, eldest son Of AIR. E. H. EnwARnEs, managing director of the Lancashire United Transport and Power Co., has been appointed traffic superintendent of the Swinton depot of the company, in succession to the late MR. J. AINSWORTH. After five years with the Westminster Bank, he joined the L.U.T. company in December, 1931, at the head office in Atherton, his first post being that of licensing officer responsible for dealing with the Traffic Commissioners, Last spring he was appointed private-hire superintendent.
MR. I-. W. LOUDEN, who addressed the annual meeting of the northern area of the Scottish C.M.T.J.A. at Dundee, on January 13, in his capacity as general secretary of the Association, qualified as a lawyer at the age of 21. Some 36 years ago he entered the office of Messrs. J. and -A..Hastie, of Edinburgh, in a junior position, and is now senior partner of that business and a well-known figure in the Court of Session.
• An expert in transport matters, Mr. Louden has been secretary of the Scottish C.M.U.A. since its inception in 1921, and is solicitor to that body.
MR. PETER BENNETT, ODE., J.P., has been nominated as President-Elect of the Federation of British Industries. Mr. Bennett, who is chairman and managing director of Joseph Lucas, Ltd., has for long taken a leading part in the work of the Federation-, and during the past year has been assisting the President, Lord Hirst, in the capacity of Deputy-President. For many years he has been chairman of the Birmingham District Committee, He has been closely associated with the work of the Empire Committee, and was present at the Ottawa Conference. He is also well known in the motor industry as a Past President of the S.M.M.and T. 41 MILLION COMMERCIALS IN U.S.A.
Transport operators in the United States paid 418,000,000 dollars (£83,600,000) in motor taxation in the year ended September, 1937, There are 4,400,000 goods vehicles and 127,000 buses in use in the States, whilst nearly 30,000 operators own fleets of more
than five lorries. These figures are officially issued by American manufacturers.
South Shields Haulage Prices.
South Shields Corporation's central purchasing committee is to offer haulage work for the 12 months ending December 31, 1938, to local contractors at 2s. per hour for team labour, 3s. 6d. per hour for 30-cwt. lorries, and 4s. per hour for 2-tonners.
Lincs. Toll Bridge to be Freed.
The toll bridge over the Barlings River at Short Ferry, near Fiskerton, Lincolnshire, is to be purchased and freed by Lindsey County Council. The decision to purchase is subject to d Ministry of Transport grant being obtained-, about which there is expected to be no difficulty.
Fire Protection at B.I.F.
The Valor Co., Ltd., Erdington, Birmingham, has• been appointed official contractor to the Birmingham section of the British Industries Fair for the supply of Valor fire extinguishers to exhibitors' stands.
The company is• also a maker of steel equipment for works and offices, and has recently issued a new catalogue dealing with this side of its activities.

25 Years of Magneto Achievement.
Since ;912, the British ThomsonHouston Co., Ltd., Rugby, has been engaged in the development of the magneto, and, to crown 25 years of achievement, built the magnetos with which Capt. Eyston, Sir Malcolm Campbell and Flt. Lieut. Adam obtained, respectively, the Land Speed, Water Speed and Altitude Records.
The company has just issued it publication entitled " Twenty-five Years of Magneto Development," which is full Of interest, and traces the progress of
Magnetos from their earliest beginnings.. It is profusely illustrated and is Weil worth perusal on both historical. and technical grounds.
