Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

by Rob Willock • The Transport & General Workers Union (T&G) has played down talk of combining with a French union but says demonstrations by UK drivers in support of a maximum 48-hour week could be a possibility.

T&G national transport officer Ron Webb says: "Although I cannot foresee like-for-like action, if there is no progress made towards restricting hours, I can see demonstrations to support these aspirations." The T&G is campaigning to get transport workers included in EU maximum working week legislation.

Webb denies rumours that last month's meeting between T&G and French transport union CFDT signals an imminent amalgamation. "All talk of an amalgamation between the French and UK unions is absolute rubbish," says Webb. "Transport drivers unions are simply forging alliances across Europe in a show of solidarity, campaigning for reductions in working time, improved rates and terms of employment, especially pension provisions," he adds.

T&G representatives plan to visit the CFDT in October "to share information and get a better understanding of drivers terms in France".

News analysis page 7. • The Transport and General Workers Union (T&G) cannot rule out possible strike action by UPS staff in the UK as the dispute in the US over part-time working continues. "There has been no direct action in the UK as of yet," says Ron Webb, T&G national transport officer. "But we cannot rule out any possibility." He says the union will be keeping an eye on the num

ber of temporary and parttime workers employed by UPS in the UK. Numbers are understood to have risen greatly over the past few years.

Trade unions will be reviewing the dispute at an international meeting in Brussels this week.

The T&G has been helping US union Teamsters to explain the situation to UK staff. Explanatory leaflets have just been sent out.
