posts will be considered, Appointments are being made on the basis of the joint recommendations of Regional Transport Commisaioners, Divisional Road Haulage Officers, and Chairmen of the Hauliers' National Traffic Pool branches.

When.called upon, these officers will cone upder the control of the appropriate Area Road Haulage Officer.

Cargo.—The general cargo and meat moved in the week ended July 31 totalled 149,000 tons. On the basis of the figures for recent weeks, the Ministry may be kaid to be handling traffic through the scheme at the rate of well over 8,000,000 tons a year. Defence.—Recruiting for the riefence Lines continues fairly briskly, although the total still falls a long way short of the number required. The number of vehicles enrolled in the week ended August 1 was 728, bringing the total at that date to 39,$5Q. Outstanding contributions in this Week were 137 from Eastern. 116 from North Midland and 105 from Northern Regions. The 'Midland Region, by a sudden spurt, recaptured thefl third position in 'the regional table which we recently taken from it by North-Eastern.
