At his first conference since he stepped down as head of the Commission for Integrated Transport he said the government should look to new technology to improve the UK transport system.The new transport secretary should: • Stand up to motorists who corn plain about speed cameras • Introduce widespread road user charging • Become a world leader on tackling climate change He says: "Technology will help us in transport in tackling emissions, demand management and congestion.
"But unless we have political leadership and a firm timetable all the technology in the world will not be enough to tackle our transport problems."
