Mr. Butterwick first became associated with the now aefunct Leeds Horse and Motor Owners' Association, of which he was vice-chairman. Then he took over the chairmanship of the old Yorkshire Motor Coach Owners' Association, and afterwards became chairman of the Yorkshire Regional Area Committee of the Road Haulage Association. While holding this office he had a severe illness, in 1931i, and by the time he resumed activities the R.H.A. had become part of A.R.O. Since then, Mr. Butterwick has held a number of positions in A.R.O., including membership of the National Council and the National Haulage Sectional Board, the vice-chairmanship of the Yorkshire Area, and the chairmanship of the Leeds Sub-area of the aforementioned Association.

He was the first chairman of the old Yorkshire Traffic Area Joint Conciliation Board on wages and conditions, and he represents the employers' panel of the new Yorkshire Area Board upon the new Central Board. He is also chairman of the road-transport section of the Leeds Chamber of Commerce, and a member of the Leeds District Advisory Committee under thin, emergency scheme, instituted by the Minister, of Transport.

An association member of the Institute of Transport, Mr. Buttcrwick is on the committee of the Leeds and district section, For service during the war, when he went to France and became a sergeant in the road-transport section of the Army Service Corps, he received the Meritorious Service Medal as recognition.

Mr. E. Parish, of Hatfield, succeeds Mr. Butterwick as vice-chairman of A.R.O.'s Yorkshire Area. The area finance committee has been constituted as follows:—Messrs. Butterwick, Parish, H. Foxton (York), E. A. Morris (Leeds), and J. A. M. Bright (Selby). Mr. L. Baddeley (Huddersfield) has been co-opted on to the Yorkshire Area Committee of the Association.
