MAN lead times may still be long, but they are lower in the UK than in Eastern Europe. Andy Salter reports.

UK OPERATORS complaining that lead times for new vehicles are extending over the horizon are doing better than their counterparts in Eastern Europe.according to MAN. Speaking at the recent 'I'GX/TGS launch, MAN sales and marketing boss Peter Erichreineke said that while UK operators were having to wait until the second half of 2008 for vehicle deliveries, the lead times for Eastern Europe had extended to the first quarter 2009.

"It's no doubt disappointing for UK operators, but the lead times are currently the shortest for the UK," he said. -We are working to safeguard our existing customers, while putting build quotas in for new orders."

The TGX/TGS was launched to the international press last week, ahead of its public debut at the forthcoming RAI Show in Amsterdam at the end of October. The new range of vehicles replaces the TGA in the MAN line-up, with the TGX aimed at longhaul applications, while the TGS is focused on fleets and construction.

A new 680hp V8 sits at the top of the German marques range. All vehicles are launched in Euro-4 format and, with the exception of the V8, rely on EG R technology to meet the engine emission regulations.

MAN engineering boss KarlVictor Schalle, recently bestowed with a professorship from Munich's technical university, confirmed that MAN will meet the Euro-5 regulation mandatory on new vehicle types from October 2008 using EGR.

"Our Euro-5 engines will be launched in the second half of 2008, with the first vehicles leaving the factory from January 2009,-he said. "The engines will be equipped with two-phase turhocharging and double charge-coolers using water. Our trials indicate that the Euro-5 engines will have the same fuel efficiency as our E uro-4 machines."
