Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

Trucks can now reach Euro-5 emissions with SCR or EGR technology why don't manufacturers combine them to produce a much cleaner truck?

In theory at least, running both technologies could cut emissions but the engine would have to generate more power to run the two systems. This would require more effective cooling, and the added weight of more cooling equipment. Daf is planning to combine the technologies to reach Euro-6 and Ritske van der Meer, chief engineer of engine development at Oaf, believes the additional equipment needed will add 200kg.

Oaf favours a two-stage approach, because Euro-6 engines will need about 30% more cooling capacity and fuel consumption will rise by a predicted 3.5%.

An interim emissions-control stage cleaner than Euro-5 but not as clean as Euro-6 would give the manufacturers engineers more time to tackle the fuel-consumption issue before taking the step up to Euro-6. But there are still some obstacles to overcome.
