Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• IBM Data Centre Services have introduced a new "application package", available for customer use as from September 10.

The IBM depot siting programme helps the user to select appropriate geographical sitings for any requested number of depots in a distribution network. The programme selects the sites on a basis of cost /efficiency, calculating relative values to reduce the expense of supplying goods to the depot and thereafter to specific customers in the area it serves.

The programme, which can be used to plan fresh distribution networks or to verify and augment existing ones, consists of three basic routines which may he used together or independently. It will prepare (1) a table of distribution "zones" and their distance from all other zones specified. These distances are calculated from Grid Co-ordinates with an expansion factor relating straight line distances to distance by road.

The user specifies any geographic barriers that must be taken into account (rivers, etc.) and other considerations such as points of extreme traffic congestion.

The computer will then (2) calculate an approximate solution and (3) improve on this solution by iteration until the satisfactory result is achieved.

There are 10 IBM Data Centres in the UK, located at London (two), Birmingham, Bristol, Croydon, Glasgow, Manchester, Newcastle, Nottingham and Welwyn Garden City.
