GUY is another manufacturer in the British Leyland Motor Corporation that has a lot of things to show visitors to its stand at Earls Court. There are seven exhibits and while four of them are new models the other three have certain changes to them also. One thing that goes right through the exhibits is that they all have air-operated cam brakes with spring brake actuators used for the parking and secondary systems. With the exception of one chassis exhibit, all seven are fitted with the same design of all-steel cab although the interior varies slightly according to the engine fitted in some cases.

Two of the new models have a Perkins V8.510, 185 bhp SAE gross diesel engine. These are a four-wheel tractive unit with 9ft-wheelbase for 28 tons gross combination weight and a 20-tongross six-wheeler designed as a basis for truck-mixers and with a wheelbase of 11ft. The tractive unit has a six-speed overdrive gearbox and hub-reduction rear axle; overslung rear springs are a new feature. These are now offered on all Big J four-wheel tractive units and rigid models while sixand eight-wheelers with four-spring suspensions retain the underslung-spring design. There is a slight difference in engine between the models.

In the case of the truck-mixer chassis the fan is mounted high on the engine to leave the front of the crankshaft available for use in conjunction with hydrostatic drum drives. The six-wheeler has a 15.5-ton capacity double-drive rear,bogie with hypoid-bevel axles and lockable third differential and there is a four-spring suspension layout.

A new four-wheel load carrier is a 16-ton model with the Leyland 401, 138 bhp gross IBS AU 141) engine coupled to a five-speed constant mesh gearbox. Here, the single-speed spiral-bevel rear axle incorporates a new Guy-design pressed-steel axle casing which is now offered on all 16-ton models and tractive units up to 26 tons gross capacity.

The fourth new model is a three-axle machine designed for Continental use. It is an extra heavy duty 6 x 4 incorporating a number of special features. The power unit is a Cummins NHK220 diesel which drives through a six-speed gearbox and the two-spring rear bogie has double-drive hub-reduction axles. The model is similar to a six-wheeler shown at Earls Court two years ago but there is a different location for the rear springs and bogie brackets—bogie capacity is 20 tons—while the front axle capacity has been increased to 7 tons. The six-wheeler is suitable for operation solo at 26 tons gross but a Rockinger towing attachment is fitted to the vehicle on show which is designed for a gross combination weight of 45 tons. The left-hand-drive chassis has a single-bunk sleeper cab.

Revised models shown by Guy consist of a 26-ton-gross two-axle tractive unit with the overslung rear springs and pressed-steel axle casing, a 32 tons g.c.w. two-axle tractor with the same suspension but hub-reduction axle and a 24-ton-gross eight-wheeler which like the others has spring brake chambers but is unusual in that the parking and secondary brakes are applied to the second axle and the rearmost axle of the bogie. The engines in these three models are the AEC AV 505, Gardner 6LXB and Gardner 6LX respectively and while the 32-ton-gross tractor has a new 10-speed overdrive splitter gearbox the others have six-speed transmissions.
