Machine Tools and Motor Vehicle Exhibits at Olympia.

The main hall of Olympia is occupied at present by the Machinery and Engineering Exhibition, which was opened on Saturday last. Whilst the exhibits are numerous, there is ample space to spare in the building ; the minor hall is employed only as a restaurant and café chantant, and the gallery is in sole possession of the band. Be that as it may, the exhibition is well worth a visit from all those interested in the construction of motor vehicles. , C. W. Burton Griffiths and Company, Ludgate Square, Ludgate Hill, show a number of automatic tools and lathes, on stands facing the entrance to the main hall, together with a large collection of hand tools, braces, drills, spanners, and gauges : this company makes a speciality of machine tools for motorbus and general repairs.

Sonnenthal and Company, Limited, of 85, Queen Victoria Street, E.C., has two large stands in the building. Several grinding machines, vertical and radial drills, and a handy portable crane are shown by the company. W. H. Willcox and Company, Limited, Southwark Street, S.E., shows an assortment of lubricating oils, engineers' tools, the Willcox wire-bound hose, and numerous other accessories of value to those interested in the commercial vehicle. A leading line with this firm is the " Penberthy " patent automatic injector. These are made for all descriptions of steam generators. The Hyatt Roller Bearing Company, Limited, of 47, Queen Victoria Street, S.E., on their stand, No. 42, has staged a lorry by Broom and Wade, Limited, of High Wycombe, which is fitted with Hyatt bearings throughout. It is stated that this vehicle has run 15,000 miles, the cost of repairs being under L:1, excepting the re-shoeing of the wheels. Specimens of motorbus bushes also find a place on the Hyatt stand. Practical demonstrations of the " incanto "system of acetylene welding are given on the stand of the Acetylene Company, Limited, of tit, Victoria Street, Westminster, S.W. Tangent Wheels, Limited, of Grove Road. Balham, has also a stand for the exhibition of Tangent wheels for both light and heavy types of motor vehicles. Ludwig Loewe and Company, Limited, of Farringdon Street, E.C., has several machine tools, small tools and gauges on exhibition, and John Holroyd and Company. Limited, has also a large collection of machines of various types. Fastnut, Limited, of 6o, Aldermanbury, E.C., shows the Fastnut washer, on stands No. 35 and 63. The Joseph Dixon Crucible Company, Limited, of 26, Victoria Street, S.W., has an exhibit comprising all the company's Graphite productions, which include Graphite lubricants for motors, Graphite greases, etc. The Roc Steel Castings Company, Limited, of Temple Bar House, Fleet Street, E.C., and West Drayton, Middlesex, has a good selection of castings suitable for motor

car, lorry, and omnibus work, both in the rough and machined. Castings have been made by this company for Clarksons, Limited, the London Road Car Company, Limited, the Simms Manufacturing Company, and the ‘Vestinghouse Brake Company. Buck and Hickman, Limited, 2-4, Whitechapel Road, E., on stands No. no and 127, has a quantity of American machine tools on exhibition, among them being a milling machine and a universal and tool-grinding machine by Brown and Sharpe, and a high-powered rapid reduction lathe by the Springfield Machine Tool Company, together with other items of interest, Charles Churchhill and Company, Limited, 9-15, Leonard Street, Finsbury, E.C., has also several American machine tools on view, whilst Messrs. James Walker and Company, Lion Works, Garford Street, West India Dock Road, E., show examples of " Lion " steam and water packing, and Walker's metallic jointings, etc. Messrs. Schuchardt and Schutte, 34, Victoria Street, Westminster, S.W., have an .exhIbit comprising a variety of machine tools, many of them driven by electric motors, and several of special interest to motorcar manufacturers, Wilkins and Robinson, Limited, Victoria Works, Rugby, has secured stand No. 229. This company's ‘vell-known vanadium steels, used extensively in motor vehicle construction, were dealt with in a recent article in 44 ME COMMERCIAL MOTOR " (see issue of September t3th, page 23). Savage Brothers, Limited, of St. Nicholas Iron Works, King's Lynn, shows a 5-ton steam wagon, fitted with an electric generating plant and short lorry plat form. This is propelled by an enclosed vertical engine, fitted with Pickering governor. It gives oil 20b.h.p. at 500 revolutions per minute, the working steam pressure being 200lb. per square inch. The engine drives a compound wound multi-polar dynamo.
