A ROAD CONSTRUCTION worker digs sand away from a dune fence for maintenance adjacent to a completed stage of the Trans-Sahara Highway through Mauritania. Once finished, this road will provide a paved route from Tangiers. Morocco, to Cape Town, South Africa. The final stages of the 470km stretch through Mauritania, funded by the Arab Fund for Development. are under construction should be finished by the end of 2004.
Contractors on the project face problems such as a lack of fresh water, extreme temperatures and shifting desert dunes.
