TRAILER AND bodybuilder Boalloy is to close its Leyland factory with the loss of 80 jobs.
The Lancashire plant. which specialised in rigid truck bodies. opened in 1995. Boalloy emphasises that it is not exiting the rigid market and is transferring production to its Congleton headquarters. The closure was announced to the workforce last Monday and there is now a period of 30 days' consultation. It says it has full order book to keep the factory running until the New Year.
Sales director Jim Gibb adds: "Frankly it wasn't making a profit. Given the erratic demand in the pattern of the rigid business coupled to the enormous price pressures we are facing, we have been forced to take a cold hard look at it. The plan is to build 20 rigid bodies per week at Congleton. This will make us a stronger company going forward as we have been funding a loss at Leyland."
