THE continued failure of the Government to tackle the urgent problem of Britain's obsolete road system gave rise to outspoken criticism at a Meeting in London of the Standing Joint Committee of the Royal Automobile Club, the Automobile Association and the Royal Scottish Automobile Club. .
It was stressed that further restrictions on road users by legislation now foreshadowed, without at the same time taking the necessary steps to make the roads suitable and safe for the rapidly increasing traffic, were bound
to fail.
The committee resolved to, use all their influence to persuade the Government to accept the principle of a road loan, recognizing that the construction of new roads and the development and improvement of the existing system could not be paid for out of income because of the persistent raiding of the Road Fund for general purposes.
It was pointed out that a loan of £100m.. would cost only about £4m. a year in interest, which was rather less than four days' revenue froth vehicle and petrol taxes.
