IHAVE recently returned from an extended tour of the Continent, during which I met operators and manufacturers of goods and passenger vehicles. We discussed their problems and methods of solving them, and I was shown how Germany is restoring its road transport system.
Taxation in Germany is higher even than in this country, with the result that on long-distance haulage, a 20-ton payload hardly yields a profit. A German co-operative society which uses 24-tonners gave me intimate details of its costs and I reproduce them in this symposium. The German Post Office is also keenly conscious of the need for economy in transport and makes extensive use of vehicles with small two-stroke engines.
