by Mike Jewell A Northern Irish driver has appeared before Crewe magistrates accused of three offences of causing death by dangerous driving and various hours offences following a fatal accident on the M6 last February.

Two trucks, a mobile crane and a car were involved in the accident at Holmes Chapel, which closed the motorway for 11 hours.

A truck driven by Wilbert Porter, of Kesh, County Fermanagh, was involved in an incident with the crane. His truck then crashed through the nearside safety barrier and down a 61,1ft embankment, badly injuring Porter.

The crane careered across the central reservation. hit the car and overturned on top of it. A second truck smashed into the wreckage, spilling drums of oil over the motorway.

Porter faces charges of causing the death by danger ous driving of crane driver Andrew Davies, car driver Paul Venus and truck driver Clifford Roberts. He has also been charged with exceeding the daily driving limit on the day of the accident, taking insufficient daily rest, making a false tachograph record and failing to keep a proper tachograph record.

The magistrates adjourned the case until 29 September and gave Porter unconditional bail.
