over 500 people were killed in accidents at level crossings. A working party of transport specialists of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe has recently urged the abolition of level crossings which carry heavy traffic or where visibility is poor. The heavy expense of doing so, however, was considered by the party to make it impracticable to carry out the necessary work immediately.
