" The wheels of wealth will be slowed by all difficulties of transport at whatever paints arising, as a carriage Is by the roughness of the roads over which it runs."—John Beattie Crozier.

The S.M.M. and T.'s New Policy.

The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders has formulated a new policy in relation to agricultural shows. It will enable goods vehicles and utility vehicles for agricultural purposes, which have a rated load capacity of not more than two tons, to be exhibited at all or any agricultural shows, provided that the exhibit be made by an agent or distributor and not direct by the bondsigner. The shows to be supported and the classes of vehicle to be exhibited must be notified to the Society by the bond-signer not later than one month prior to the opening of each event.

The question of what (if any) agricultural shows shall be approved for the exhibit of commercial vehicles other than those referred to above has yet to be settled.

Railways and the Royal Commission Report.

The railway companies have recently Issued a joint statement relating to that part of the final report of the Royal Commission on Transport which deals with their services. The statement is "quite brief, owing to the fact that the recommendations call for detailed consideration before points of criticism can be raised.

The references in the report dealing with the companies' policy regarding road services, which, they say, throw some doubt upon the wisdom of their action in expending large capital sums • for the purpose of establishing services which may be in direct competition with the railways, are treated with. It is stated that the companies, in lieu of establishing competing road services,

have adopted a policy of 'enteringinto partnership with existing road-transport undertakings, coupled . with arrangements which have, as their chief object, the provision of co-ordinated road-and-rail services in the public interest.

This policy, it is added, has enabled the railway companies to discontinue many unremunerative passenger services on branch lines and, at the same time, to arrange for the prevision of adequate road services in substitution..

Public-service-vehicle Examiners.

The Ministry of Transport is now in a position to proceed with the arrangements for appointing public-servicevehicle examiners under the Traffic Act.

It is essential that applicants should possess good practical experience of the construction or repair of heavy motor vehicles, be men of the highest integrity, and able to draw up reports clearly.

-The salary will he £4 15s. to £5 per week in the provinces, and £5 '5s. to £5 10s. in London, whilst in each of the 12 areas there will be a senior examiner who will receive £300 per annum, except in London, where the salary will be £320.

The appointments will be comparatively few and will ultimately be made through the Chairman of the Commissioners for each area, but applications should be sent, in the first instance, to The Institution of Automobile Engineers, Watergate House, Adelphi, London, W.C.2, stating full details of experience and the area in which the applicant desires appointment.

Purchasing Carlisle's Transport System.

Another step towards the replacement by buses of tramways services now worked in Carlisle by the Carlisle and District Transport Co., Ltd., is the decision of the watch committee to licence a number of buses owned by the Ribble Motor Services, Ltd., which is acquiring the local undertaking.

The intention of the company is to work bus services over all tram routes, and the total seating capacity of the buses for which licences are being granted is equal to that of the trams now in service.
