IDhe Hawk extends his hearty congratulations to Somerset firm Thomas Hamlin, which has been supplying engineering services to the transport industry for over 100 years. It was founded in 1896 in Bridgwater (the same year that the first Ford appeared) by Thomas Hamlin and his sons Charles and Frederick. Manufacture of the Silver Cross hicyle was its earliest foray into transport. In 1904 the company built its first car, also named the Silver Cross, a 71ip runabout complete with four-seater tonneau body. In 1940 it took on women workers to meet the demand for outboard motors and Bren-gun carriers. Charles Hamlin's sans Ralph and Tony carried the business on from the first generation and Tony's sons Mark and Neal became directors in 1978 when Ralph retired. Today Mark and Francine 'hen together with their Oil Matthew are at the helm of a tam ily business that has spanned five generations and now provides specialist engineering services including precision tuning, milling and engine reconditioning. Here's to the next hundred!
