• A training scheme that takes the long-term unemployed and turns them into fully qualified drivers has sent its iirst recruits out on the rood.
The Government-funded programme, run in the West Midlands by Kingswinford Industrial Training Services, put its first recruits through their Class-C LGV tests last week, following 14 weeks of driving tuition and theory lessons. The course takes 20 candidates at a time for two days a week. It is designed to give unemployed people training in all aspects of working as a driver: apart from test and medical fees it is free.
Candidates include a number of women; the course has its own creche.
