Like the Hawk (CM January 16)

I agreed with every word written by Mr K. Shaw (CM December 26) because I have had an exactly similar experience. Having spent the past six years driving LandRovers, Bedford RLs, and coaches over every Middle East and Far East route, with much desert experience, especially trans-Sahara, I felt qualified to offer my driving services, together with my good French and working German plus business degree, to a number of trucking companies on Eastern routes and African routes. Not one reply have I received to date,

I remember a letter from Mr D. Norris of Africanus in a November '75 CM offering a trans-Saharan recovery and escort service, and there are few people who know the Sahara better than Mr Norris.

Some weeks later I had reason to telephone Africanus and inquired after his proposed scheme. "No interest yet," said Mr Norris.

I was on the dreaded Tahir in April and October 1975 and talked to several drivers on their first trip out. They had no idea what they had to face and their lack of electrical and mechanical knowledge was only matched by that of other drivers I met who were returning after " ditching " their broken trucks, or, sometimes, perfectly good trucks.

Mind you, Big Willy is going East (CM January 23) and will look after your lads !

G. EDWARDS, Brighton, Sussex.
