an automatic foot-operated machine, the Meritus P.S.40 Autoforge spotwelder incorporates an ingenious timing device and a control to maintain a constant pressure on the work while the weld takes place, . The machine is of fabricated pedestal pattern, with a fixed upper arm and vertical sliding head, the leverage between the pedal and sliding bead giving a high degree of mechanical advantage. Electrode pressure is regulated by Means of a hand wheel on the sliding head. and is calibrated in lb., whilst tht, pressure switch incorporated ensures that the welding cycle vvili not commence until a predetermined pressure is applied to the wait.
Once the pedal has been depressed to operate the welding cycle, the control gear takes over and the pressure on the job being welded is aotomatically main-. tamed until the timing circuit has operated, the pressure then being released. During this process it is not necessary for the machinist to keep his foot on the pedal. as it is held down by the interlock mechanism and is released when the weld is completed.
The Meritus P.S 40 is fitted with a control giving a variable forging time after welding, the welding tips remaining together under pressure for a predeter: mined period, depending on the nature of the work Thus, faulty welds cannot be caused by the removal of pressure before the welds have been consolidated.
The whole welding cycle is completely independent of the operator, and once the machine has been set and all the controls adjusted, every weld produced is similar in quality.
