Lancaster demanded money by threatening the cashier with a cucumber in a bag, may be forgiven for believing that they had stumbled on to the set of the TV programme Brad/es About — especially as Lancaster's getaway vehicle was a waiting taxi.
The would-be thief had hailed the taxi in East London and stopped at a greengrocer's to buy the cucumber and a bunch of bananas. He offered the unwitting driver a banana before being taken to a Shell petrol station in Old Street, which he then robbed of i!60 by pointing the bagged cucumber at a terrified cashier. The court did not see the funny side of it, however, and Lancaster got 31/2 years. Seems like his salad days are over.
