ASTEP forward in the movement to improve municipal haulage rates in Yorkshire is the adoption by Barnsley Corporation of a fixed scale of payment for the hire of vehicles. Mr. W. J. Lowe, secretary of the Yorkshire Area of A.R,O., who with Mr. J. T. Rodwell, vice-chairman of A.R.O.'s Barnsley Sub-area, has taken an active part in the negotiations leading to the adoption of the scale, emphasized to our Yorkshire correspondent that apart from the benefit to operators immediately concerned, the Barnsley move would afford additional backing for an approach to some other Yorkshire municipal authorities, the hiring rates of which are well below an economic level. The Barnsley scale, which is the same as that of Sheffield Corporation, came into operation on December 11. Comprising hourly rates, graduated according to carrying capacity, it is as follows:— REPAIR OF ENEMY-DAMAGED 1ROADS THE Home Secretary was asked in Parliament last week by Captain Plugge whether he was satisfied that adequate attention was paid to the importance of repairing enemydamaged roads in comparison with enemy-damaged houses, and whether, in cases where criticism existed, he would receive complaints and make investigations.

Mr. H. Morrison said the relative urgency of repairs to damaged roads and damaged houses must vary according to circumstances, Generally speaking, prior needs received prior attention, but if the Member had any particular case in mind perhaps he would let him know. • Asked by Sir A. Maitland whether all necessary steps were being taken to repair damaged roads as speedily as possible, Colonel Moore-Brabazon replied that these repairs often necessitated much preliminary work on the restoration of underground mains and services or on the demolition of adjacent buildings rendered dangerous. He was constantly exploring, with the responsible authorities, any steps which could be taken to speed up repairs.

Hauliers' Spitfires Named

LORD BEAVERI3ROOK has agreed to name the two Spitfires provided by busmen and hauliers in the East Midland Traffic Area the " Transport Men-Ace" and the " Transpitter." Up to date, the subscriptions received by Mr. J. H. Stirk, the Regional Transport Commissioner, on behalf of this fund amount to £11,231.

Bakers' Association Grades Substrip

D AKERS who are members of the 1/National Association of Master Bakers, Confectioners and Caterers, will, in future, pay the annual subscription on the basis of the number of shops and vans they operate. Whilst small traders will pay El Is., owners of three retail shops or six vans will be assessed at 42 2s., and those with six retail shops or 12 vans, £3 3s. per annum.

SOUTH AFRICAN TENDER DATE EXTENDED

FOLLOWING publication of the paragraph in our last week's issue, dealing with the call of the South African Railways and Harbours Administration for industrial type pneumatic-tyted tractors with fourcylindered engines, we now learn that

the closing date for tenders has been extended until February 19, 1991. As mentioned last week, fuller details may be obtained from the Department of Overseas Trade, 99-103, St. Michael's Road, Bournemouth.

Scottish Association Entertains Soldiers

THE first of a series of monthly 1 entertainments to soldiers billeted in the Glasgow area was given a few days ago at the Grand Hotel by 40 members of the Scottish Commercial Motor Users -Association. About 200 men were entertained to dinner and a smoking concert, and a similar number will be the guests at the later entertainments which will be undertaken by other members of the Association.
