3 aim Lodge Services, Scotland's first independent motorway service area, has opened on the M74 after a long battle to persuade the Scottish Office to allow vital signs directing drivers to the site.
John and Aileen McInnes invested £500,000 from the sale of two family businesses and the family home. They then moved in to a caravan on the 22-acre site near Douglas in Lanarkshire. Despite a deal with Gulf Oil to sell fuel on the site, two years passed before the Scottish Office gave permission for the road signs.
Supporters of the scheme suspected the Government of not wanting to upset some of its friends in big business operating nearby sites.
