WOMEN TO TRAIN FOR RIBBLE BUSES

LASI week-end, Ribble Motor Services, Ltd., invited applications from women of 21 and over to train as conductresses. The company has over 1,600 conductors in its service, most of them virithin the presumed military age limit. With this in mind it is intended to train a number of Women as a nucleus to take the places of the men if the need arises.

BRIGHTON'S LAST TRAMS GO.

IVITHDRAWAL of the remaining VI' tram services is announced by Brighton. Hove and District Transport. This will take place as from September 1. The services will, of course, be replaced by trolleybuses for the most part.

It will be remembered that the municipal trolleybus system was officially inaugurated in the town at the beginning of June, when we reported it fully.

BIGGER BUS PROFITS AT NEWCASTLE.

IN Newcastle-upon-Tyne there are I now 57 miles of municipal motorbus route, 221 miles of trolleybus route and 35 miles of tramways and, according to the latest report of the general manager of the municipal transport undertaking covering the year ended March 31, 1939, three tramway routes were converted to trolleybus operation during the 12 months.

During the period under review there was a gross surplus of £86,009 on the operation of trolleybuses and a net surplus of £65,318, the corresponding figures for the previous year being £60,651 and £49,022 respectively. On the motorbuses there was a gross surplus of £58,712 and a net balance of £43,958, the previous year's comparable returns being £52,708 and £34,054.

In the course of the year the trolleybuses covered an aggregate mileage of 2,866,165 and carried 39,281,180 pas

sengers, both figures being materially higher than the previous year's returns. In the case of motorbuses, 3,833,098 miles were run and 29,782,621 passengers were carried. At the end of March last the corporation was operating 204 vehicles, of which nearly one-half were trolleybuses.

BIG GARAGE FOR BURNLEY.

BURNLEY Corporation has approved a scheme for a new central garage to accommodate 80 vehicles of the Corporation, at an estimated cost of £19,530.

BRISTOL WORKERS GET BETTER PAY.

BUS drivers, conductors and maintenance workers employed by the Bristol Tramways and Carriage Co., Ltd., are to receive an increase of 2s, per week in wages, following negotiations between the company and the men's union.

ASHTON SETS UP NEW RECORD

THE gross profit on the working of the passenger-transport department of Ashton-under-Lyne Corporation during the year ended March 31, 1939, was £30,409, which forms 294 per cent. of the total annual revenue of the department. After deducting sinkingfund and other charges, the net surplus came out at £13,801. The past year was the first in the annals of the transport department in which an amount in excess of £100,000 has been earned, and not only did it provide a record in receipts, but also in the number of passengers carried.

At the end of the period covered by the report, the corporation was operating -43 vehicles, all of them being oilers, with the exception of seven trolleybuses. The income on the trolleybuses totalled £31,667, whilst operating costs amounted to £22,947, so that there was a balance of £8,720 to carry to the net,revenue account, where, after meeting sinking-fund and' other charges, it was reduced to a

surplus of £3,391. In the case of motorbuses, income totalled £71,617 and operating costs £50,570, the balance being reduced in the netrevenue account, after meeting sinkingfund and other charges, to a surplus of £9,768.

During the year the motorbuses covered a total mileage of 1,144,573 and the trolleybuses 435,457, the passengers carried on the former being 14,250,511 and on the latter 6,342,849.

i‘ RIBBLE " DOES BIG LITTLEWOOD'S OUTING

TWO convoys of coaches, each forming an eight-mile-long procession of 180 vehicles, last week conveyed 11,000 employees of Messrs. Littlewood's Football Pools from Liverpool to Blackpool on their annual day's outing. Believed to be the largest privatehire contract secured by a road-trans

port company in the North of England, the who% of the transport arrangements were handled by Ribble Motor Services, Ltd., without a hitch.

So large was the party that for convenience the outings covered two days, 5,500 travelling by 180 coaches on the Wednesday and a similar number on the Thursday. Luxury coaches, consisting mainly of Leyland Cheetahs, of which the company now operates a large fleet, collected the trippers at five branches in Liverpool and one in Birkenhead.

A BOOST FOR ABERDEEN'S REVENUE.

ABERDEEN Transport Department reports that for the year ended in May, the revenue from buses and trams amounted to £344,620, an increase of £14.145, as compared with the previous year. The number of passengers carried was 77,175,353, an increase of 2,892,720.

The trams brought in a revenue of 2166,478, an increase of £8,627. Working expenses were £129,242, an increase of £5,095. There is a profit of £7,014. The buses brought in a revenue of 2172,918, an increase of £5,189. Working expenses totalled £149,483, being an increase of £1,062, Profit " was 22,259.

TOURING COACH WITH LOUDSPEAKER FOR JOHANNESBURG.

WITH a microphone and amplifier VI( equipment which enables the driver to give a running commentary to the passengers whilst en route, a special towing coach has been ordered by *42 Johannesburg Municipality from Leyland Motors, Ltd. This method of pointing out places of interest and of scenic value has already been tried with success in South Africa by Durban Municipality, which ha: now three Leyland coaches so equipped in service.

The amplifier equipment comprises a light-type microphone, which can be suspended around the driver's neck, and a loudspeaker installed in the pas senger saloon. Luxury coachwork by Duple Bodies and Motors, Ltd., will be fitted to the Leyland petrol-engined Cub chassis for Johannesburg. The body will have luxury seats for 24 passengers with fine visibility.

BLACKBURN ABANDONS MORE TRAMS.

VUE learn that Blackburn Transport W Committee has authorized the purchase of 15 double-deck buses to replace trams on the Wilpshire route on April 1, 1940. Damen Corporation has given formal notice terminating the agreement between the two authorities for the joint running of tramways between the two towns as from March 31, 1940. I N the year ended March 31, 1939, income on the motorbuses of Southampton Corporation totalled 2118,748 and, as working expenses amounted to 287,069, there was a balance to carry to the net revenue account of £31,679. After meeting interest and other charges, this was reduced to 227,760.

During the year the buses covered an aggregate mileage of 2,011,250 and carried 16,445,404 passengers. At the end of March last the corporation was operating 69 buses, a large portion of them being oilers_ MORE A.E.C.S FOR "DEVON GENERAL"

QUTSTANDING among recent orders received by the Associated Equipment Co., Ltd., is a contract from the Devon General Omnibus Co., Ltd., for 25 Regal oil-engined coaches. Throughout the past nine years this company has regularly placed orders with A.E.C. when expansions and fleet renewals have called for additional vehicles. The latest contract will bring the total number of A.E.C.s requisitioned in that period up to 128.
