Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

ACCOMPAN YING illustrations show a 3-ton commercial vehicle equipped with earth-boring plant for the purpose of sinking holes for the erection of poles and light steel towers for overhead transmission work. The equipment consists of all auger, with suitable gearing and a take-off from the engine, which is mounted over the rear end of the chassis, and is provided with means for adjustment to permit either vertical or angular holes being bored, the latter being necessary for anchor points. One picture shows the auger at work digging a hole 2 ft. diameter by 7 ft. deep, the work taking two minutes to complete. For setting the poles, the lorry is also provided with a light jib crane and winch, by means of which the pole A38

can be hauled into position, then raised and set in the hole previously dug by the auger, in the manner shown in the other illustration.

The crew of such a mobile outfit consists of two men, and it is possible, on suitable ground, to sink and set more than 100 45-ft. poles in eight hours.
