Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

Two Carrimore Semi-trailers for Use With E.R.F. CI 6 Tractive Unit for Pay-loads of 20 tons and 14-15 tons D ECENTLY supplied by Parr's Gar1N. age, Ltd., Leicester, to R.. Keetch and Son, Ltd., Nottingham, the E.R.F. tractive unit and two Carrimore semi-trailers, illustrated on this page, are of considerable interest. Both the Carrimore machines are easily detachable, so that either can be used with the E.R.F.

The last-named is a model Cl 6, powered by a Gardner six-cylindered oil engine and having an 8-ft. 6-in. wheelbase. Its wheels are shod with 40 x 8 tyres.

Built for 20-ton loads, the big dropped-frame semi-trailer has its four wheels arranged in transverse line on two detachable rocking axles. Affording a low-level platform area measuring 13 ft. 5 ins. by 7 ft. .6 ins., the frame has, as its basis, four longitudinal members, each of which is 10 ins. deep. At the front, on the high-level platform, is a light winch, not shown in the picture.

Braking is effected by two F. and J. vacuum cylinders, actuating shoes in 18-in. by 4-in, drums on all four wheels. Alternatively, the brakes can be applied by a Carrimore multi-stroke lever, through the medium of cable. Two Woodhead semi-elliptic springs of the trunnion-ended type comprise the rear suspension system.

In this connection, the method of detaching the rocking axle assemblies is noteworthy. The longitudinals are extended, at the rear, as channels, and within their extremities are trunnion brackets carrying the back ends of the springs. Each bracket fits in horizon

tal grooves in the channel, and when a locking piece, for which vertical grooves are provided, is lifted upwards and removed, these brackets can be slid out rearwards. A pin retains the locking pieces in position, in normal circumstances. The front ends of the springs simply slide out of their trunnions.

To support the weight of the exceptional loads which this semi-trailer is built to carry, 12.75-20 tyres are used on the four rear wheels, With regard to the straight-framed machine, this is designed for 14-15-ton loads, and is equipped with eight 36 x 8 tyres. It has twin axles arranged in tandem, and mounted on the ends of inverted semi-elliptic springs. The brakes in this case include 16-in, drums, whilst, as before, actuation is by two F. and J. vacuum cylinders.

Again, four main members feature in the frame and the platform measures 20 ft. by 7 ft. 6 ins.
