Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• Of the changes made to the specifications of Scania trucks for 1972, the most important concern the largest models, from the 110 series to the 140 series. Leading new features and improvements may be listed as follows:

El a new range of chassis frames; 0 new "range" gearboxes; o braking system developments; 0 improved clutch;

0 new driver's seat; O additional wheelbase alternatives.

Considerable extra strength, compared with earlier models, is achieved with the new chassis frames. Beam height, flange width and metal thickness are all increased and material quality is raised. The rear overhang is made longer on longwheelbase types and shorter on the shorter models. The front is considerably stronger, a valuable point with snowplough applications.

The 110 and 140 series have a new compact range-type gearbox with 10 forward gears with uniform steps between the ratios. The first five ratios cover the low-speed range and the second five the high-speed range. A refinement is that first gear position is opposite reverse, for simplifying turn-around situations.

Making the largest gearbox of the range-change type results in smaller dimensions and lower weight with extra strength. In addition, there is a much lower first gear. An overspeed protection device in the form of an electric transducer prevents gear-changing into the low-speed range if driving speed is too high.

Increased valve and pipe areas on six-wheeler brakes further reduce reaction time to conform by a comfortable margin with the new regulation suggested by the EEC that the most distant brake cylinder shall have reached 75 per cent full pressure within 0.6 seconds.

All wheels may as an option be fitted with automatic self-adjusting brake levers aimed to give quicker operation and to reduce service by extending the life of linings.

The spring handbrake is fitted with a locking valve to prevent the vehicle rolling away if the brake should unintentionally be released while the engine is charging up the compressed air system. A warning light on the instrument panel shines when the locking valve is in operation. To release the handbrake it is necessary also to release the locking valve.

On all forward-control models the servooperated clutch now has a fixed-length . linkage not requiring adjustment. A greater amount of pedal travel Makes for smoother clutch operation.

Forward-control models are fitted with Bostrom drivers' seats as standard. The passenger seats are of new design.

The Scania LBS 140 series is now available with a 14.2-metre wheelbase.
