OliT of a staff of 3,023, an average of 190 drivers and conductors was absent every day, Cl1r. S. I. Dyson, chairman of Sheffield Transport Committee, said last week. Problems were more acute on Saturdays, when the absentees numbered 220.
The department were under-staffed by 356 drivers and conductors: 140 employees had a normal day off each day.
Because of rising costs the undertaking was losing about 11,000 per week, he added.
