By Bryan Jarvis WITH THE UK continuing to wait for a government decision on testing longer, heavier vehicles, prominent Irish haulier Joe Reynolds unveiled his 'MEV' (More Efficient Vehicle) concept at last week's Federation of Petroleum Suppliers exhibition in Dublin.

Reynolds argued that in fleet tanker format, his truck and semi-trailer combination would give a 51% improvement in fuel economy, a 36% increase in litres delivered per hours worked, a 19% increase in average loads and a 7% cut in delivery times.

"A tanker rig like this would carry 58,500 litres of oil, compared with our usual 38,000 litres," he added. To illustrate his idea, he exhibited a Euro-5 Mercedes-Benz 10m rigid pulling a 13.6m semi-trailer, both drawn from the Reynolds Logistics fleet the two being interlinked by a two-axle dolly.

He pointed out that despite the overall combination being only one LWI3 large panel van longer than a standard artic, two of the roadtrain tankers could replace three of his conventional artic combinations.

As a result, they would take up much less road space, greatly reduce CO2 emissions and cut his fleets' annual trips to the airport by 4,000.

There would be no increased axle weights because the extra loading is being carried by the two-axle dolly.

Initially Reynolds is seeking a temporary permit to use a tanker combination over a three-month trial period, to deliver fuel from Dublin Port via the port tunnel to Dublin airport.
