In the preliminary phone calls to set up our meeting, we asked Marco Haig to think less about the past, and more about the present and future. But on the day of our arrival, he was busy sorting through a carrier bag full of old images recently found at the bottom of a filing cabinet. "I remembertiuite a few of these vehicles as a youngster," he recalls fondly.
The sheer depth of knowledge might be a reasonable enough giveaway to the fact that Marco is, in fact, a third-generation Haig in road haulage. The company was founded back in 1946 by his grandfather, David Wilkie Haig, who started as an agricultural hauler.
In his day, David was quite a pioneering chap. The business grew throughout the 60s to become one of the biggest employers in the area. Not content with the confines of the country's borders, by the early 70s, the company was beginning to venture into the European marketplace with regular services to and from Italy.
