NEW RULES ON USE OF MATES

THE Northern Ireland Arbitration Tribunal have drawn up new provisions governing the use of mates on Ulster Transport Authority lorries. Existing agreements and awards are superseded.

No mates il1 be provided by the Authority where assistance for loading and unloading is provided at the loading and unloading points.

With a few exceptions, mates will be employed on all lorries carrying livestock, and in Other cases where the load is made up of heavy and awkward units and no help is available at either end of the journey.

it is understood that a claim by the Amalgamated Transport and General Workers' Union that mates should be provided on all lorries of 5-ton carrying capacity and over was not established by the Tribunal.
