DESPITE the 17-day strike, which cost the Undertaking £100,000 net, and the wage award at the end of the financial year, the Sheffield Transport. Department made a Surplus for the eighth successive year. This was disclosed in the annual report and statement of accounts issued last week.

The £20,0,000 a year which the wage award would add to the wages bill, had resulted in fare increases, which should help to maintain financial stability this year, it was stated.

"This does not mean that everything is plain sailing," said Mr. R. C. Moore, general manager. "We have built up our reserve fund to £823,811 but in the next three years we anticipate spending about Elm. on renewal of buses."

The programme of reinstating highways, following the withdrawal of trams. which had been speeded up by about 18 months, represented another major commitment. It meant that during the current year the department had to meet expenses of E180.000 which would otherwise have been spread over three years, said Mr. Moore.

Total revenue for, the year was £3,877,600 and the reduction in income of £44,000, apart from the cost of the strike, was largely due to fewer passengers, it was stated.
