!RASED on one of 50 Leyland Royal LP Tiger chassis recently supplied to Madras, a half-deck bus with a separate compartment for women and no stairs for the conductor to climb has been placed in service in the city.

The bus has a rear entrance and a front exit. Passengers enter via the women's compartment, which has a mirror and a hat rack. They enter the central gangway by ascending a step, and access from the gangway to both the upper and lower scats is simply by one step up or one step down. Special attention has been paid to lighting and ventilation, the front windscreen opening with an overlap to provide an upward current of air.

Constructed at the Government transport central workshop in Madras, the body is 30 ft. long and 8 ft. wide. The height is just over 12 ft., compared with the legal maximum height of 15 ft. 6 in. for a double-decker in India. Internal height is 8 ft. 6 in., the height from the gangway being 6 ft. 9 in.

Registered gross laden weight is 12 tons. There are 28 upper seats and 32 lower.
