British Roads in Sedan Age

MO ONE who sees the latest colour film, "The Road to the Future," made in Britain, Holland: France, Belgium and Germany, under the auspices of the Roads Campaign Council, can be otherwise than appalled by the road-traffic conditions and the lack of new road construction in Britain as compared with the achievements abroad. This film, which was shown last week to members of the Lords and Commons, will be displayed throughout the country. A previous film, "The Great Hold-up," was seen by over a million people in the past two years, whilst a petition for better roads, collected during a six-month tour last year in 24 towns, produced 150,000 signatures in Lancashire and its surrounding areas alone. This petition was carried by a lady in appropriate dress and in a sedan chair, from the Savoy Hotel to the House of Commons, and received on January 24 by three M.P.s who presented it to Parliament. Signatures from other areas visited have brought the total to over half a million and these will be presented to Parliament in the near future. Introducing the film, Mr. Wilfrid Andrews, chairman of the Council, mentioned that delays on the roads were costing the nation £1,000m. a year. Meanwhile Germany was getting on with doubling its 1,200 miles of motor roads, Holland had 400 miles built or under construction and 600 more planned, Belgium intended to build 570 miles and France 1,100 miles.

No Depression in this House

AT the traditional New Year's reception of the Daimler-Benz company, Dr. Fritz Konecke, the president, reported on the activities of the previous year and pointed out that the company would be beginning 1957 with full employment at all their branches and orders for a full two months' production. There was no question of any dismissals or short-time working.

During 1956, 108,000 cars and commercial vehicles were produced by the 50,000 employees of the company.. The estimated turnover for 1956 is in the region of f140m., and this figure includes over £.50m. in the export market.
