Road Safety Week begins. It is the first attempt, on a nation-wide scale, to combat the danger of road accidents during the height of the holiday season. It has been arranged by the Ministry of Transport with the co-operation of the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents. The Minister will himself fire the opening shot of the campaign when he broadcasts this evening.

A team of impartial observeis—Mr. Harmer Nicholls, M.P., Mr. Peter Freeman, M.P., and representatives of the Ministry of Transport, the Metropolitan Police and the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents—will tour the roads on Monday and issue a report on what they see. No details of the route will be given until the report is issued.

Special arrangements are being made to collect reports of casualties during the first five days from all police districts. The total for the country as a

whole will be announced by the Parliamentary Secretary, Mr. J. Gurney Braithwaite, M.P., in a message on Saturday, August 9, together with comparable figures for the corresponding period of last year.

A " Roadmanship " Exhibition is being held at Charing Cross Underground Station, London. A feature of the exhibition, which the Minister will open to-day, will be machines for testing the reactions of road users in an emergency.

Some of the main causes of accidents will be demonstrated by the Metropolitan Police at a " Roadmanship " display to be held by the West London Road Safety Committee in Hyde Park next Wednesday and Thursday. The display will also include a "Dustcart Derby" competition between crews drawn from Westminster and Kensington.

Nearly 1,000 local road safety committees are supporting the week.
