There is a promotiun to record in the Clincher Tire concern, and this I do with pleasure and much interest. The very first acquaintance I ever made in the tire trade, years and years ago, was Mr. " Clincher " Scott. He was a great figuro in those days. and he mude one or two of us think that the tire representative's lot had some vastly compensating moments. I remember that, when eventually I became interested in the manufacture of bicycles, both the initial and repeat orders for tires went to Clincher, as naturally as the morning follows the night. So the name is writ large in the tablets of my memory. Now I understand Mr. H. D. Kerr has had a move up which I am glad to see. I knew him for years with the Continental Tyre Co., and now his official designation would appear to be " Assistant Manager of the Tyre Sales Organization of the North British Rubber Co., Ltd.. Clincher House. 169, Great Portland Street, W."

The hire eystem, or as it is sometimes called the " easy-payment " system, has been utilized but slightly in the commermercial-vehiele world up to the present, chiefly. I believe, with steam wagons. Now, however, there is a large scheme

about to supply petrol vehicles of all types, even umnibuses, chars-à-bancs, taxicabs and of course vans and lorries in the same way. The plan would appear to be simple enough, the buyer or hirer, whichever he may be, pays an agreed sum down, and the balance is paid by monthly instalments to suit his convenience. To cover this extra credit, 5 per cent. is to be added to the selling price of the vehicle, and this, I think, is very reasonable. I have no information at present as to whether the vehicles are to he obtained under a hiring agreement and then to become the property of the hirer on completion of the payments, or whether they are purchased from the start to be paid for by instalments. In the former case the hirer concedes the right of the owners to retake possession of the vehicle should the payments fall ia arrear. as is the case with pianos, sew• ing machines and furniture. My impression, however, is that the new plan is for absolute sale, and it. thus opens up the trade to an extraordfirary degree. Tradesmen and small manufacturers have their capital locked up in their businesses, and the convenience of this plan. with such a small percentage added, will he prodigious. I shall look forward with much interesf to see how this develops.
