The Watch Committee of Eccles Town Council has decided to make application to th0 L.G.B. for sanction to the borrowing of 21100 for the purchase of a 'four-cylinder petrol-driven motor fire-engine with chemical apparatus and fire escape combined.

L.C.C. Activity.

The Fire Brigade Committee of the Council reports that there are at present in use in the fire brigade 21 petrol-driven motor fire-engines, and, pending further experience being obtained with these appliances, no further engines of the present: types are being obtained except two which the Council decided to purchase for the new fire stations in course of erection al: Shooter's Hill and 'Hammersmith. The Committee states, however, that it is considering the question of obtaining in future years a large number of motor engines to displace the horsed engines now in use, and the question has arisen whether it would be desirable to obtain some lighter motor engines of smaller pumping capacity than those at present in use and on order, which are of about 50 h.p. and are capable of delivering 320 gallons of water a minute at a pressure of 120 lb. per square inch. The Committee expresses the opinion that it would be desirable to obtain a lighter engine as an experiment, as by that means it would be possible to judge of the relative merits of both the heavy and light types. A quotation had accordingly been obtained from Leyland Motors, Ltd., which has supplied several engines to the brigade, amounting to k/90 (including 225 for extras) for the supply of an engine of about 40 h.p. capable of delivering 250 gallons of water a minute at a pressure of 120 lb. a square inch ; the Committee has decided to accept this. Leyland Motors. Ltd.. is to be allowed to sublet its contract to the Bees Ro-turbo Manufacturing Co., Ltd., for the supply of the pump. The same Committee further reports having considered the question of converting to electric haulage the six horsed turntable long ladders at present in use, and it has come to the conclusion that steps should be taken to fit. electric chassis to the existing ladders. Accordingly the three available firms had been asked to submit quotations for the work, and the following quotations (which each include £25 for extras) had been received :—H. Simonis and Co., £780; " Cedes" Electric Traction, Ltd., £810. Each maker promised delivery in four months, and in each case it was proposed to sublet the supply of the batteries to the Tudor Accumulator Co. Messrs. Simonis and Co., moreover, proposed to obtain the chassis and wheel motors. from the Braun Premier Works, of Nuremburg, while the " Cedes" Electric Traction, Ltd., undertook to construct the chassis and motors at the new works to be established by the company at Stamford Hill. It was further stated by Messrs. Simonis and Co., that the Braun company had recently been controlled by English capital to the extent of 70 per cent., and that the 'English interests had already expressed a strong desire to start manufacturing in this country. Further, that if the appliance nowoffered was accepted and found satisfactory any future orders which might be given for such appliances would be executed in England.

Iii all the circumstances the Committee decided to accept the offer of H. Simonis and Co. at the price stated.
